Other than planning the last of our date nights, normally this time of year we are doing a few other things...getting close to our last cutting of hay, getting trucks ready for silage chopping season, maybe getting one game of baseball in with the kids before school starts.
Normally we start chopping the first week of September. This year seems to be right on schedule.
To get ready for Harvest this year I am planning as much ahead as possible. That means meals, grocery visits, even making sure I have diaper bags ready for each day. I finish up things in the yard and start getting buildings cleaned for Winter normally at the end of the summer..mainly because I don't see much of our home when the busy time hits. This year may be a bit different.
I started by making a list of all the field meals I could think of. My list turned out pretty good if I say so myself. Around 25 different sandwiches. Which is impressive from where I was 2 years ago.
Before my week of cooking begins I plan out my week for two meals a day, plus some snacks or dessert thrown in. As I go I simply pick a meal somewhere in the week and mark it off as I make it. At the end of my cooking week I plan my next one- just so I am ready to roll when my week comes around again.
Providing good meals for the day is really important on the farm. A lot of times our guys are stuck in the trucks or combines for 16+ hours. There only lifeline to food being me. So, I make it a personal challenge to always keep them happy.
My ideal harvest would be perfect weather conditions for 2 weeks straight and then one day of light rain, all day. On a Sunday, so my husband would get to spend the day with us.
As harvest starts my posts may be sporadic..but I will do my best to keep you updated on the happenings on our farm. Even it includes me saying how excited I am that I have found another field meal for our guys!
